Madonna of the Slum by:  Vicente Manansala

Vicente Manansala is the one of the best contemporary artist the Philippines has ever produced. His contribution to the Philippine art scene is unmatched, proving his works have stood the test of time.

Born on January 22, 1910 in Macabebe, Pampanga. Vicente as a child know how hard life can be. His parents earning just enough to make ends meet, plus, a large brood to feed, it is amazing that it didn’t stop him for reaching his dream of becoming a true artist.

Though he is poor, he made sure that he grabs every opportunity that came by him. As a child, he saves some of his pocket money (baon) to buy pieces of paper and watercolor, to be able to draw different picture. Records show that he draws anything from insects (such as grasshopper or cockroach), the Holy Family, and even his own Mother.

His desire to become an artist helped him a lot in reaching his goals; from the time he went to the University of the Philippines and studied Fine Arts. Until, he earned a scholarship grant to study in Canada, and later in France, proved to be the best ingredient to become a successful artist.

He didn’t just earned the respect and adoration of his family and friends, but even the whole country celebrated, Vicente’s unique and superb talent, which earned him the title: the National Artist of the Philippines in Visual Arts

Manansala’s coveted artwork, the Madonna of the Slum, is indeed one of the finest works he had ever done. Why you ask? Because, this one of a kind art piece is a symbol of his ingenuity as an artist, by applying a sort of hybrid technique in making this kind of artwork, he called it Transparent Cubism.   read more>>>>
